Guide to referencing

When starting uni, I didn't have a clue on how to reference. So here is an easy explanation and some templates to show you how to reference Harvard style.

IN THE ESSAY:

In your essay you just write the surname of the author and the date and page number in brackets.

For example:

Dog's have four legs, as Smith (2012, p.438) highlights dogs.....

p.s - don't write them in green!

IN THE BIBLIOGRAPHY:

Referencing books - basic template:

Surname, Initial. (Year of publication) Title. Edition. Place of publication: Publisher. Series and volume number if relevant.

  • if there are multiple authors, you follow the same structure but it would look like this:

Surname, Initial., Surname, Initial. (Year of publication) Title. Edition. Place of publication: Publisher. Series and volume number if relevant.

Referencing journal articles - basic template:

Surname, Initial. (Year of publication) 'Title of article', Title of Journal, Issue information, Page reference.

Referencing websites - basic template:

Surname, Initial. (Year that the site was published/last updated) Title of website. Available at: URL (Accessed: date).

Referencing pictures - basic template:

Surname, Initial. (Year) Title of photograph. Available at: URL (Accessed: date).

WEBSITE THAT I RECOMMEND FOR OTHER REFERENCING STYLES:
